Marlon Riggs Award

(We award the Marlon Riggs to Bay Area filmmaker(s) or
individual(s) who represents courage and innovation in the world of
cinema.)

  • Rahsaan “New York” Thomas, Cori Thomas and the San Quentin Film Festival

One of the most inspiring film events of 2024 was the first San
Quentin Film Festival — a groundbreaking film festival that
took place inside the facility and featured the work of men who
are incarcerated there. It’s the brainchild of Rahsaan “New
York” Thomas and Cori Thomas. They both made the impossible
possible and have achieved something remarkable in every
way. Rahsaan is a filmmaker and an award-winning podcaster and
is elevating the conversation — much in the spirit of Marlon
Riggs — about people who are incarcerated and wanting to
showcase their talent and to open the eyes of others about who
    they are.
